Utilitarian, tough, able to tackle truly terrible roads, the 4Runner TRD Pro is a stout and faithful companion. No, these trucks don’t have power tailgates, digital gauges or a nine-speed transmission, but that only means there’s fewer things to go wrong.

A short dash and contoured A-pillars give all 4Runners excellent forward visibility, and large mirrors make it easy to see along the sides and into reverse.

Brakes on 2018 versions must have been fine-tuned because they felt firm and more responsive, lacking the squishy feel that has plagued other fifth-gen 4Runners.Ĭargo.

Indeed, the ride quality of the TRD Pro is the best scenario I’ve ever enjoyed - never tippy, delivering excellent feedback through the suspension, and hydraulic steering. It’s entirely unique for its size - not too big and not too small. The 4Runner continues to be built in Japan and still get body-on-frame construction, meaning it does not ride like any other SUV, but nor does it come with the shudder and bounce sometimes found on a pickup.
